Welcome to a pleasant afternoon at the Library. We'll have good books and good people to discuss our monthly novel.

This month's book is...

Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar.

Akbar's debut novel follows a young Iranian-American poet named Cyrus Shams, who is recovering from alcoholism and an inherited trauma from the 1987 "accidental" downing of his mother's plane by the U.S. Navy. The story follows Cyrus as he grapples with his identity, grief, and addiction while becoming obsessed with the idea of martyrdom, which leads him to uncover a family secret connected to his mother.

Book copies are limited.

a plain cover with a small illustration of a man on horseback carrying a sword. Title is overlaid at the top.
